We are waiting for you at Bodeguita on July 31!
It’s extremely hot in Kiev these days, like in Cuba indeed. So you are encouraged to immerse into the atmosphere of such a distant, but so close Cuba.
Let’s dance salsa and have a refreshing mojito under the traditional Cuban recipe this Thursday.
On July 24 we are going to hold another Bodeguita’s Cocktail Session.
Let’s hang out!
Each cocktail session introduces new drinks and we learn how to make cocktails.
This time our cocktail ambassador Elya Mikhailenko is going to tell us about ArArAt brandy cocktails.
We will learn recipes of four cocktails: old Punch Royal, original Side Car, refreshing Mint Julep and sweet Brandy Alexander.
Punch Royal. Punch is known to appear in India, where Britain learnt about it (considering to be the cradle of the cocktail), and later it spread throughout Europe. Punch means five from Hindi, so the cocktail consists of five ingredients.
Bartenders know even a poem about it:
One of sour, two of sweet
Three of strong and four of weak
A dash of bitters and a sprinkle of spice
Serve well chilled with plenty of ice!
We are going to make our Punch under one of the oldest recipes based on Ararat Ani brandy and Havana Club 7 YO rum.
Side Car. The cocktail was invented during World War I. Side Car means a sidecar attached to a motorcycle. It was named after one eccentric soldier, who always came to the bar on a motorcycle with a sidecar. Hearing a sound of the motorcycle, bartenders said: “The sidecar motorcycle again.” So his nickname passed to the cocktail as well.
We will try to make the cocktail with Ararat Ani brandy, sweetened with Cointreau orange liqueur and balanced with lemon juice.
Mint Julep. Cold Juleps were always one of the most known American cocktails. They remind the prosperity of the mid 18th century, when it was made on peach brandy. “Travels of Four Years and a Half in the United States of America” book referred to a drink called “Julep”, describing it as a dram of spirituous liquor that has mint steeped in it, taken in the morning. However the kind of alcohol was not specified, so different liquors were used, flavored with sprigs of mint. Whiskey got widely used for this cocktail right before World War II. But we are going back to the origins and to make Ararat Ani brandy based Julep, mint flavored and spiced with a peach note.
Brandy Alexander. Like many other alcohol drinks with cream and sweet liqueur, the cocktail appeared due to Prohibition in the United States in the early XX century. Its recipe is quite simple – brandy mixed with cream and cocoa liquor. Sweet cocktail ingredients served to mask the alcohol and thus to avoid a ban on its sale. The cocktail was created in the 1920s by a bartender at the famous American underground Speakeasy bar, visited by members of the high society.

Bodeguita’s guests are good at making cocktails based on rum, whiskey and tequila. Let’s expand our horizons! Our fourth cultural and educational cocktail event is about Beefeater-based drinks!
On July 3, under Ambassador Elya Mikhailenko’s supervision we are going to learn how to make five classic cocktails. Join us as soon as you can! After all, our cocktail sessions are not only a great chance to learn how to mix ingredients for making cocktails, but also to socialize with your friends!
Johnny be good. This special cocktail created at one of the most popular rock clubs in Kiev became very popular because of unusual combination of gin, coconut liqueur and pink grapefruit juice. It was named after a song about Johnny B. Goode, talented street musician with predicted great glory. The cocktail is believed to be as good as the virtuoso’s music.
Bramble. The cocktail was created in England in 1984, and as it is a quite new drink, its history can be more in-depth. It was created by Dick Bradsell, known cocktail expert. The cocktail is popular because of the place of origin. Dick Bradsell worked as a bartender at famous Fred’s club in London, where the drink was created and then spread across England and Europe.
Clover Club. The Clover Club Cocktail has recently celebrated its centenary. Its century history began in 1911. First it appeared at the Philadelphia men’s club of the same name. The cocktail got popular at the Prohibition time when sale of alcohol beverages was banned in the U.S
Southside. The cocktail is believed to be created at the South Side club on Long Island, New York. The club was of sportsmen’s style: the wealthy of New York were fishing and hunting over there, staying at the clubhouse known by its Mint Juleps. The club was busy because of its great reputation and in 1866 was bought and formed as private. The bartenders kept creating new cocktails like julep to satisfy guests. Southside was the most popular.
Martinez. Appeared in the early 1860s, it became a predecessor to all Tini cocktails. According to one version, it was created by Jerry Thomas for a traveler headed to Martinez who asked for something new. So, Professor was impressed with the new cocktail and immediately entered it to his Bartenders guide. It is the first mention of the cocktail, so it seems to be the most probable version.
